Prune it Back, Raise it Up: A Day of Growth at Bird Fork Farm
The thing about a pruning workshop is that it’s going to have to happen in the winter, cold be damned, but as the ladies pulled up one by one on this chilly day, the energy was high and hearts warmed quickly.
Women from all walks of life gathered this day at Bird Fork Farm in Dunlap, TN. Some farmers, some gardeners, some who had no experience in either, just excited to learn. They were there to learn how to do some traditionally intimidating things - prune a tree, compost cuttings and create biochar.
Alysia of Bird Fork Farm and Krisi of Alter Eco Farms were a perfect pair to lead this workshop. Both of them care deeply for the land and feel an intimate connection with the world around them. Both of them are also female, small business owners in the agricultural industry, and therefore very passionate about empowering womxn in the field.
By the end of the workshop, everyone had done something they hadn’t done before, whether it be climbing a ladder with a chainsaw, or blowing a fire to life with their own breath. Hearts and bellies were full thanks to a nourishing meal from local farm partners, and the camaraderie that comes from shared experience. On this day lessons were learned, friendships were born and womxn were empowered, thanks to a generous grant from Women in Farming and Ranching.
“I had a truly lovely day at Bird Fork Farm. The workshop offered clear, hands-on learning in a peaceful, welcoming setting, paired with delicious food and a strong sense of care for the land. I especially appreciated the grounded approach to pruning apple and pear trees and the opportunity to learn alongside other women who share a love of nature, gardening, and local stewardship. The atmosphere was calm, supportive, and generous—an experience I’m grateful for and would happily recommend to others interested in deepening their connection to land, skill, and community.” -Anonymous participant
